Church, Naxos, Greece
This is a painting of a church and other buildings in Naxos Town on the island of Naxos, in Greece. Churches are tucked into every imaginable corner in Greece — on the side of roads, on small and large hilltops, and even inside a Venetian Castle, like this one.
Traditionally, many churches were often built near the water, to provide a place to pray for sailors on dangerous voyages. Others were said to have replaced Ancient Greek temples, built atop locations that have been considered sacred for thousands of years.
Most Orthodox Greek churches have an appealing architecture, with simple lines, white walls, and minimalist ornamentation. Standing near the sea or against the blue skies, it's easy to understand where the design for the Greek flag originated.
