Sugar Dock, Toronto, Canada
This is a painting of the loading dock of the Redpath Sugar Plant on the Toronto waterfront.
Despite rapid redevelopment along the eastern portion of the formerly industrial Toronto waterfront, the Redpath plant keeps working. Enormous cargo ships from all over the world dock here often, transferring raw materials in and refined sugar out via the St. Lawrence Seaway's connection to the Atlantic Ocean.
The smells generated by the sugar refining sometimes blanket the entire downtown area, and unfortunately they are not always as pleasant as you might expect. But it's nice to have this surviving reminder of what used to be a thriving industrial port.
