Head of Triton, Athens, Greece
This is a painting of a carved head of Triton, an Ancient Greek god. The carving dates to around 150 AD and originally decorated the Odeon of Agrippa, a large stone public building located in the Ancient Agora of Athens.
The head now hangs on one of the pillars of the restored Stoa of Attalos, balanced somewhat precariously atop another shard of stone and held in place with rusty iron pins. The bottom of the head is jagged and broken, and some of Triton's impressive beard to the lower left is missing.
We visited the Agora and many other historic sites in Athens during our stay in January of 2020.
