Construction Workers, Toronto, Canada

March 2025  ·  Oil on board  ·  5" x 7 "

This is a painting of workers at the site of a new midrise building being constructed near Trinity Street and Mill Street in downtown Toronto. I've walked past this spot a few times a week for several years now, watching the progress. At this point, the workers were applying a blue plastic vapour barrier to the raw concrete, harnessed about 6 or 7 stories in the air. The building has since progressed to near completion.

Toronto has dominated the city rankings in North America in terms of the number of simultaneous cranes in action for many years now. All the construction is annoying, and many of the buildings are bland condominiums, but Canada's desperate housing shortage means we need to keep building, preferably without sprawling into farmland. This particular building will have much-needed rental units in a very nice neighbourhood near the city centre.

Toronto trivia: this building is occupying the lot where the Athlete's Village for the 2015 Pan Am Games was located. In 2017, the same lot also hosted facilities for the Invictus Games, the event where Prince Harry first publicly introduced Megan Meghan as his partner.
